About Melissa

Author, Certified California Naturalist, & Outdoor Storyteller

I am an outdoors author, Certified California Naturalist, and photographer based in San Diego. My work focuses on regional natural history, native flora and fauna, and mindful exploration across the Pacific West.

From Trail Guides to Natural History

My writing background is rooted in deep field research and detailed guidebook production. I am the author of 75 Great Hikes Seattle (published by Moon Travel Guides), a comprehensive resource covering the diverse trail systems of the Puget Sound region. In addition to writing and field research, I logged GPX tracks and created custom trail maps for all 75 featured routes.

Over the years, my trail guides, regional features, and outdoor reporting have appeared in publications including Modern Hiker, The Mercury News, and Washington Trails Association.

Since relocating to Southern California, my focus has shifted toward local natural history, coastal ecology, and quiet outdoor living. Rather than chasing editorial deadlines or trail miles, I use my naturalist training to document the unique landscapes of San Diego County and the broader West—from coastal estuaries to desert bloom cycles.
